Crystal Visualizations: Exploring the Beauty of Fractals

Abstract Art Installation by Yingri Guan

This series of work involves generating complex fractal images based on detailed analysis of crystals’ chemical structure. By collecting data such as the distance between each element, angle of the chemical bonding, and molecular mass of the crystalline structure, Yingri Guan transforms and abstracts the data into fractals through constructing a series of equations and formulas.

Yingri Guan, a visionary artist and designer, has created a mesmerizing art installation called Crystal Visualizations. Inspired by the intricate beauty of crystals and the mathematical elegance of fractals, this unique series of work combines art, technology, and science to create a captivating visual experience.

Crystals and fractals share a remarkable similarity in their formation. Crystals are formed by the orderly arrangements of atoms or ions, while fractals are generated by repeating simple geometric shapes according to a set of rules. Both formations involve the repetition of identical singular units. Guan's fascination with this connection led to the creation of Crystal Visualizations, which visualizes crystal structures using generated fractal images.

Using computer programming and mathematical equations, Guan analyzes the chemical bonding in crystals and generates fractal images. Drawing inspiration from four different crystal structures, she creates four unique pieces. These images are then exported into vectors and transformed into sculpture etchings using laser cutters. The cut acrylic glass pieces are assembled together with a wooden table structure to ensure stability. When illuminated with lights, the generative lines of the fractal images come to life, magnifying their beauty.

The Crystal Visualizations art installation measures 1000 mm in width, 800 mm in depth, and 1200 mm in height. Its abstract and generative nature makes it a captivating addition to any space, whether it be a gallery, museum, or private collection.

Interacting with Crystal Visualizations is an immersive experience. Viewers are invited to closely examine the four different pieces and learn about crystal structures. The intricate details and patterns within the fractal images provide a deeper understanding of the complexity and beauty of crystals.

The creation of Crystal Visualizations was not without its challenges. Guan aimed to maximize the aesthetic beauty of the piece while ensuring its physical feasibility. The initial version of the installation used stacked acrylic glass for easier assembly, but it proved to be too heavy. Guan explored different options and eventually settled on a heart-shaped assembly with the topographic map layers corresponding to each other. The installation also required careful consideration of how to install the LED lights to illuminate the entire piece. After testing several pedestal options and filtering materials, the final product was achieved.

Crystal Visualizations is a testament to the power of art, design, and technology in creating unique and thought-provoking experiences. Yingri Guan's innovative approach to combining crystals, fractals, and generative art has resulted in a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating installation. Crystal Visualizations was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category in 2020, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities.

Experience the mesmerizing beauty of Crystal Visualizations and embark on a journey into the fascinating world of crystals and fractals.
